my dog. she will only eat…?
ever since the recall my dog only eats old roy beef. well now i am making homemade dog food and she will hold out till she really get hungry. is this not good for the dog. but i don’t know what to do she is a picky eater. i have tried beef, chicken, turkey. what to do now?
i tried purina . she didn’t eat it in five days. also she is older and wouldn’t eat for 7 days on the dry stuff. i have cooked turkey and potatos, and carrots and green beans and put it in the processor and put in her dog bowl for the day.
garlic powder is poision to the system i am told since i used to feed it for her fleas, i read it was bad for her since she is 14 yrs old with some teeth left.
i put the dog food in her bowl for the morning till night and if not eaten i throw it away.i tried IAMS,purina, beniful, cycle only old roy was what she ate. now it is diffucult to feed her now.

Don’t worry, she’ll get used to it. Glad you’re making her food since the dog food industry is so dangerous now. Purina is still safe, as far as I’ve heard.

Pick a good quality dry dog food, feed it to your dog and stick with it. Do not feed her human food, do not feed her treats and she will eat her food. No dog will starve themselves to death.
Feeding her home made dog food is a really bad idea unless you have a thorough knowledge of a dog’s nutritional requirements.

It won’t hurt her to be hungry for a little while. Since she is eating when she gets hungry enough it’s really fine to wait for her to eat when she is hungrier. Over time she will learn to accept the new healthier food.
Think about it like a child switching from a diet of pure junk food who has to suddenly start eating fruits and veggies. It’s a switch, but it’s worth the trouble.

had the same problem, a dog will not allow it self to starve, try putting food down and if not eaten within 20 minutes, pick up dish, may take a while, but be firm, i feed my dog twice daily at the same time, good luck

First – stop switching the dog’s food. You’re making it a picky eater by constantly changing things up.
Also Old Roy is worse than McDonalds! Yikes!
I adopted a dog that was being fed table food exclusively, and I put her on Aretmis dry food — she starved herself for 3 days and hasn’t turned back since.
Your dog should not be allowed to ‘free feed’ that meaning that the bowl is down all day for her to graze on at her will. Dogs learn to eat what is before them if they are given perameters. For example, put some food in a bowl, put it down for 15 minutes – if she doesn’t eat, pick it up. Too bad until dinner – then put it down again for 15 minutes – if she doesn’t eat, pick it up. Too bad until breakfast the next day.
Soon the animal will learn that they MUST eat when the food is set before them and they will learn that they MUST eat the food that’s set before them because nothing else is coming.
You’re compounding the problem by switching foods around and trying to cater to or tailor the food to your dog’s taste.
Just like you shouldn’t make a seperate meal for a child who’s decided they aren’t gong to eat what you’ve cooked, so is the same for your dog. If she doesn’t eat, she’ll go hungry.
BE CONSISTENT! Offer the same food everyday for limited time frames, and I can almost guarantee you your dog will be eating well within a week. The dog is NOT going to starve itself to death – that would go against it’s natural instincts.
Also – feed a quality food like Artemis, Wellness, Innova or Chicken Soup – if you buy your food at the market or at a conglomerate pet store (like Petco) – it’s the same as feeding junkfood to your dog everyday.
Good luck!

heres a quick recipe for moist dog food that i have came up with. most of the time i have my dog on pedigree. but sometimes i like to treat him.
take 3 small steaks, cuts of the baron of beef roast if available, cuts with no fat are the best.
dice up into about half inch chunks or smaller, depending on the dog. use about a table spoon of vegetable oil and a light sprinkle of salt, brown the chunks in a fry pan. be careful not to cook all the way thru.
remove from pan, empty contents in a medium saucepan with 2cups of water, let boil on medium heat.
if you want a filler for the dog food such as vegetables or rice. in another saucepan use about 1/4 cup of frozen peas and diced carrots. heres a little hint, prepare a mixture for about 1/2 cup of rice following the directions. but instead of using all water for it, use half beef broth. then throw in your vegetables as it begins to cook.
by this time your meat should be almost cooked the rest of the way thru. drain the water, setting aside about 1/4 cup. and throw in the remainder of your beef broth let that simmer on low heat..when your rice is done you can set it out like a regular meal or mix it with the simmering beef and broth. if its too dry, add some of the water that you held back. and for the conditioner for the coat you can also add a tablespoon of vegetable oil (optional)
