I now have three young Great Danes: Mollie, Elliot, and Rae. Mollie and Rae were borne from the same litter, so they are both 7 &1/2 months now. As for Elliot, he’s from a local shelter, and he’s now 11 months. Great Danes grow rapidly, so what should I be feeding them that caters to this growth?
I’m feeding them mostly homemade food: Rice, Liver, and Peas. The food I have been buying, generically and name-brand, usually leaves them hungry afterwards. I hate that, because then they start nibbling at my fingers. And that hurts…so, what should I change them to?
I hope the food I’m making isn’t hurting them or anything. I really need help guys.

I have been in the process of switching my dog’s food. As a puppy, she had started out on Iams wet and dry. After some research, I now know that brands like Iams and Purina are low end, so I’m not touching the popular grocery store brands. She is 1 year old and now is on a mix of Merrick (canned) and Halo’s Spot Stew (dry), which she seems to like. Still, I’d like to know if I can do better? Right now, I don’t have the resources or time to prepare homemade or raw food (though I may switch once I graduate. I have been researching a number of high quality dog foods, and I do hope to continue feeding her a mix of dry and wet. Can anyone help me narrow my selection down? Here are the top brands that keep popping up in my research.
Orijen (Most say this the best food, but I only know of one place where I live that sells it. Commuting to get it is difficult, so I’m a little on the fence about committing fully to it right now).
Blue Buffalo: Wilderness Blend (I’d also like to hear how this compares to the other Blue Buffalo food lines)
Taste of the Wild
Solid Gold
Evo
Innova (Again how does Innova compare to its EVO brand)
Halo’s Spot Stew
Wellness
Old Mother Hubbard Creations
California Natural
Dick Van Pattern’s Natural Balance
Earthborn Holistic: Primitive Natural
Timber Wolf Organics
It’s all so confusing. And there always seems to be mixed reviews concerning everything. So which brand out of this list is the most suitable? The healthiest? Any problems that have frequently come up with some brands that should be considered? I’d really like some thorough opinions regarding any and/or all of these brands. My dog is a 15 month, 45-48 lb lab-mix, but she’s short, about two feet at the shoulders. She’s moderately active, (long walks and on weekends, trips to the dog run). But she also has long periods of inactivity, mostly when I’m at school and in the evening. She’s not a particularly picky eater nor does she have any severe allergies that I know of. I hope that helps.

My female yorkie has chronic ear infections it comes and goes and right now during the heat its acting up again. I have taken her to 2 different vets who both prescribed the same meds and cleaner and washed her ear all for $240.00 I have also changed her food to Cesar Millans organic kibble thinking perhaps something in Science diet but no so I switched her back to Science Diet. 1 remedy that did work temporarily was soaking garlic cloves in olive oil overnight and adding 3 drops to her ear and by the following day I could imediately see a difference her ear finally cleared up by the 4th day and on the 5th she had a very bad red bumpy rash so I stopped the drops and the rash finally went away 2 days later and after 2 months longest ever with no build up she has it again…Right now I’m just useing an ear cleaner So any remedies and experiences with your own dog would be greatly appreciated!
yes , I have been cleaning her ear daily its only in 1 ear the other ear is fine and she has been like this since she was about 4 months old and it just keeps building up. My yorkies are my babies and trust me I dont worry about spending money on them I just want to help her relieve the discomfort and I noticed the home remedy worked wonders compared to the vets.
PS…. she has already scratched and has a paper size cute in ear so I’m scared to used alcohol or vinegar solutions becasue of the sting…

I have a 23 lb. 9 month old beagle-boston terrier mix. She eats 1/4 c kibble and a piece of homemade “doggy meatloaf” made with oats, eggs, ground meat, cottage cheese, squash, greenbeans, and apple. she also takes a brewer’s yeast supplement every day.
thanks so far to all those great responses. my recipe for “mutt-loaf” consists of 2 c oats, 1.5 lbs ground meat, 2 eggs, 1/2 c cottage cheese and 1 c finely chopped veggies/fruits. mush together and put in loaf pan. bake 350 F for 45 minutes. it’s so easy and very, very healthy. i agree with no wheat, corn, or other fillers. i have been interested in the blue buffalo brand, but I am wary of commercial dog foods. I would rather make it myself with whole ingredients.

My GSD,Lulu,is 8 years old and the picture of health. She eats Merrick,Eagle Pack Holistic and several other premium foods. For the last several days, she has been urinating more frequently and has had two accidents in the house during the night.I took a urine sample to the vet today and her specific gravity was very low.The vet suspects kidney failure and Lulu is going in for bloodwork next week. She is otherwise acting fine – eating, active, good weight, etc. I have had dogs with renal failure before, and most of them were in their teens when diagnosed and did not last long. I did have a mixed breed called Lilac who was diagnosed at age 9 and lived to be 13,which is what I am hoping for Lulu.I really do not think I can bear to lose her right now. Lilac,( the mixed breeed) ate Hill’s KD and Cycle Senior ( this was back in the late ’80’s) and did well on them. I have been looking online for alternative treatments and diets and wonder if those of you who have had experience with canine renal failure can recommend any herbal/dietary treatments to help my dog should she have renal failure. Is there a dog food or homemade diet that you have had good results with? I am open to trying anything, because Lulu is so very special to me,she is just such a great dog and is so loyal and sweet;she is my shadow. Any advice will be appreciated and if you would star the question so that others who have had or do have dogs with renal failure can see it,I would appreciate it.Thanks in advance.

Is there anything I can make to help sooth her tummy homemade chicken broth… Baby rice pablum? I am a small home breeder. I am trying to come up with safe soothing safe foods to feed them. Maybe to increase fertility?
For all you ppl talking smack I have an excellent reputation. I do not breed in my back yard and own two dogs one of which is in fact spayed. I am and will be opening up my own kennel and will do my part in taking away from puppy mill sales while raising healthy pups in my home.
I can not change the world but I can change what happens in my home and I can nto reduce the pups born in puppy mills but I can do my part in reducing the need for them to be in business. MORE SMALL HOME LOVING BREEDERS ARE NEEDED. Small and loving being the key words. I am a stay at home mom and have the time and am always and will always search for more answers and tips, we can never know it all.
Thank you to those who have shown support and to those who have their heads in their butts come and join the rest of the world and stop being so hateful.
Raising loving pups is a good thing, it’s definately not 4 everyone, & its alot of work but it has proved to be fullfilling for me, & I love them all.
