Affordable, simple homemade dog recipes?

For those who make their own food, how do you keep the cost manageable?

I have 4 large dogs and I want to make their food but it is SO expensive. I don’t dare feed raw because I worry about the meat sources.

I currently feed the crappy kibble choices available here and sometimes cook up ground beef, frozen carrots and peas, pumpkin and white rice. (There seems to be a debate about white vs brown rice. Totally confused on that too.) I’d like to make their food all the time but need to find some other meat sources that aren’t so expensive and simple recipes. I’m not a great cook, so I don’t really know how to cook food with bones. For example, chicken. I’m guessing you would boil it and take it off the bone?

Also, for those who give their dogs fish oil, do you just buy fish oil pills from the grocery store or pharmacy? Anything else they need in their diet?

My dog always has poop-related problems?

I rescued my dog from the streets about a year and a half ago. I think she’s a Havanese, or some kind of mix. She was hit by a car long before I found her.

Ever since I’ve had, she’d had problems with her poop. The first time I took her to the vet for blood in her stool, the vet told me she was on her period. I had to go back a second time with a lovely sample!

Since then, she’s had seriously bloody stool twice more. I was told it was a bacterial infection all 3 times and was fine after some antibiotics.

She doesn’t have parvo or corona, and was checked for parasites. She also never has a solid poop. It’s not usually diarrhea, but sometimes it is. Other times it comes out like mucus. There are also times when her poop and her butt have a terrible almost a bit of a metallic smell. But she’s never lethargic and always has a healthy appetite.

I’m not sure about the quality of the food I’m feeding her. My other dog is fine on the same diet. I went a couple of month making homemade food with a recipe I found in a training book (rice, boiled chicken, vegetables, a bit of oil). It didn’t make a difference though!

I live in Korea where going to a vet is really cheap, but communication is really really difficult. I was hoping someone could give me advice about what to ask my vet to look for? It’s kind of difficult giving him the long complicated list of symptoms.

I appreciate any help you can give me!
Thanks!

Switching My Dogs To Homemade Food?

What’s the best way to switch them from store bought dog food to a home made diet?

Does anyone have any recipes and/or websites they can share?

Also, did you notice an improvement in your dog’s health?

Also, my two Labs who love to eat. And we got our older Lab from a family who didn’t take care of him, so he weighed 120 pounds at 8 months, so he’s prone to packing on the weight now. So does anyone have any suggestions on the serving size my boys should get?

In doing my research I was told to speak to the vet about switching my dogs but when I spoke to the vet (I spoke to several vets actually) they told me not to switch them, to keep using the store bought food. However I feel the store brands are full of fillers and nothing healthy. And the brands that are decent I can’t even get where we live, and I don’t read Japanese so I don’t know what the local dog food is like.
I just would like to add that I live on one of Japan’s islands and they will not ship dog food to me.

Also, at this time feeding my dogs raw isn’t an option, we’re looking into it but until we can work something out we are not able to do raw, which is why, for now, we’re doing the homemade meals.

Could you suggest a dog diet or book for cooking homemade dog food?

I have two 18 month old chihuahuas. They got sick ( runny doo doo ) The vet suggested a temporary diet where I cook for them. bland mashed chicken and rice, then switch back. Switching back made them sick again. They are doing okay now with the homemade food.

After looking at the ingredients in a lot of dog food brands, I have decided I don’t want to buy pre-made food anymore.

Can you suggest a cook book for dogs?
Yes I will verify with my vet.

What are the nessacary Vitamins and minerals for a dogs diet?

Such as Vitamin A, Calcium, those things. I’m going to be either feeding my doggie homemade meals, or designing my own dog food (sounds far-fetched but hey i can try). And can you list how much percent of each mineral or vitamin the dog needs from each one?
Thanks a bunch :D
omg doofus….what do you think i’m trying to do? Im researching on dogs right now! you think i wouldn’t check my formula with a vet first?? i dont know if you arent very intelligent or just very young, but you list the percent of each mineral and vitamin to fit into %100 percent of their diet. Its okay, just dont try and look smart anymore, and you’ll be fine…oh and dont diss somebody intill you know more about what they’re doing
(talking to got newfs here)

my cats poop smells really horrible. could something be wrong?

my cats poop smells really bad. sometimes she wont cover it up and it smells even worse. i can smell it when im like 20+ feet away. shes only 1 yr old and fixed. my other 5 yr old cat has never smelled like that. also her poop is very loose. so im thinking something could be wrong with her. so when i get paid this week im gonna take a stool sample in. will a stool sample be enough to be entirely positive every things ok with her? also it cant be her diet because i feed her organic food. + some of my dogs homemade food but only the rice and meet.
what could be wrong with her???

What diet do you recommend?

For dogs, I mean, so this is the right section. Please state the brand, food type (i.e. kibble, canned, raw frozen, homemade, or freeze-dried raw), and flavor (i.e. Nature’s Variety Chicken kibble). The more you explain what and why you recommend this, the more likely you’ll get 10 points!

I am not going to be biased, choosing an answer solely because the answerer thinks the same way I do. I will choose a best answer based on detail and good reasoning.

The more detailed, the better. I already have a dog and think he’s on a darn good diet, I just want to know what everyone else thinks. I’m going to keep the question open till it is reasonably full of answers.
