Dog foods with artificial preservatives and carcinogens to avoid?

What are some common carcinogenic ingrediants to look out for in dog food? I know that many brands such as Pedigree and Alpo have BHA, BHT and Ethoxyquin which our vet said to avoid at all costs. Does anybody know of any other harmful carcinogenic ingrediants in dog food/treats to avoid?

It’s really kind of infuriating when you start researching exactly what goes into dog food. You realize that dogs would live substantially longer if they didn’t get pumped with so much crap. I have an aunt who Alaskan malamute live to be 18 years old on a raw meat and veggie diet with minimal kibble and a cousin who has a 12 year old pure healthy Great Dane on a raw diet.

FYI, we have our dog (boxer/dane mix) on Diamond (sometimes Kirkland) dry dog food mixed with homemade vegetable, brown rice, and chicken/beef mix which he has been thriving on for 9 years. We’ve also recently started making homemade apple (seedless) and bannana treats ever since we found out many of the treats we’ve been feeding him have BHA/BHT and Ethoxyquin in them.
Sorry for all the typos, trying to type this on a Zune HD. lol.
Jayse, well mainly because I’m a college student and a hybrid kibble and homemade diet is what I can afford right now, at least until I graduate next year :-)

A good homemade dry dog food for pit bull? Best wet food for dogs from my kitchen??? Help?

I need help finding a homemade dry dog food recipe that I can make for my 6-7 month old pit. If any one can please give me either a link to the recipe or the recipe itself as an answer would really be helpful. I’m trying to find a recipe that contains all the vitamins etc. that my pit needs. When we first got our pit, the previous owner said he was feeding her Purina- which we didn’t believe (I think he was really giving her table scraps which that’s probably why she was sick) Anyways, I started giving her Purina Puppy chow then just recently changed to the Purina dog chow and just found out they’re bad dog foods. I have read allot on the web about the bone & meat meal thing and I just had enough of it. I decided that after this bag of Purina Dog chow finish I wanted to give her homemade healthy food. Also, I cook her own food sometimes & I give her boiled boneless chicken with plain white rice, boiled steak- which I don’t know if its any good or not, I don’t put any salts or seasoning in any of the food I cook for her. I have cooked her own p.b treats which she loves. Any tips on what I should cook for her as wet food that’s good for her and recipes for good homemade dry dog food would be appreciated. I want to make sure she is healthy and I also want to make sure whats in her food, I really want to scratch commercial foods off my list- I think that they’re just for profit. Thanks in advanced for those of you that answer.

My pomeranian has to go on a diet?

So my dog really has to go on a diet. She is 18 pounds and supposed to be 10 (she’s one of the bigger pomeranians). She is always hungry but follows some commands. She also steals food from my other dog, who looks like she is nearly anorexic. I need to find a healthy treat, if it is homemade it is best that it is simple, that i can give her to award her for being a good dog and stuff like that. What type of food should i feed her? I’ve been feeding her this boiled buckwheat and then this bil jack select adult (dry dog food). For her breakfast she gets a small amount of buckwheat and then around 5 after noon she gets fed a small amount of the bil jack dog food. In between this time she gets water. And we have a huge backyard, where she has free range, so she runs around there alot. What can you suggest? Please help me, if she stays this way or gains any more she is going to die.

Question about special nutritional requirements for a Boxer. Expert advice please!?

I have a 5 1/2 month old Boxer puppy. He is my first boxer. I did a ton of research about the breed before deciding to get one. However, I may have underestimated the information I read about how bad of gas that boxers generally have. It is so horrible that I cannot even stand to be in the same room most of the time. I am a cattle rancher, so I am lucky to be able to bring and have my dogs with me pretty much all the time. I just can’t stand to be in the house or truck with him because of his gas.

I read that the severe gas is due to Boxers having a little bit different digestive system than most dogs and something about Boxers having different .. or more enzymes in their stomachs. That is the most I have been able to find out on my own.

I’m hoping to find out a little more about the specific nutritional requirements for Boxers. I would think that there is a specific diet that you could put a boxer on to help them digest without so much gas. I am willing to try my hand at a homemade raw diet. I have done a raw diet for a cat before. I just have not been able to find any free information about a specific diet for Boxer dogs.

Right now, I am feeding him a food called "Taste of the Wild" that I buy from our local coop. I buy this food because it has the highest level of real meat products, and absolutely no corn or grain fillers. It is the highest quality of dry dog food that I have been able to find. It even has more real meat and less filler than the mega expensive foods that my vet sells. Yes… I know that all dry dog food is pretty lousy for your dogs, but it is the best I have been able to find so far.

Any help on reducing his horrible doggy gas will be great and information about Boxer nutrition will be much appreciated.

Feeding a Great Dane Pup?

Hi,
I plan on getting a Great Dane puppy in the next few months. I’ve been doing my research on the breed because I’ve never had one, and most importantly want to provide him with the best nutrition I can find.
I’m interested in feeding him homemade meals with beef or chicken, but I don’t really know what kind of veges or fruits I can provide for him also. I want to mix this homemade diet in with a dry dog food. I have heard to stay away from grains, and that Solid Gold Wolfcub is the best dog food to get for him. Can anyone give me some adivce on the best diet for him?

Thanks!

Rottweiler Raw Diet Please help?

Hi, i have a 2 year old rottweiler, and i want to switch from commercial dry dog food to raw homemade diet, and would like some help with the list from which meat( prefer beef like steak or ground beef or chicken breast,) and what i need to use for the food etc etc.

i tried the primal raw beef beefore, he did fine, but i got lazy ( i know its a bad thing) and the frozen beef from primal( pre-made raw diet) expired, so few weeks ago i went back to the store where i bought the beef from, and wanted to try Lamb, same day i bought it he vomitted back out ( i gave her half of it only) then i found out i shouldnt mix dry dog food with it( but i did that with the raw beef one and he did fine) so, i stopped for a week and within that week i just gave him his dry dog food i usually give him because im guessing hes not use to eating lamb, usually i give him beef or chicken breast(cooked chicken breast.) i really want to switch fto raw diet. i am thinking about going back to the store today and get the beef one, but i really hope someone can help me with the list so i can make it myself instead as i heard its better to make the raw diet yourself. here is a list of questions i hope someone with a rottweiler that they make the raw diet food at home instead of the pre-made ones.

1. what kind of grinder or w/e do i need and where can i get this at to grind the meat/veggies together? ive never fed my dog raw food besides using primal brand which are pre-made, so please be more specific on how much do i give him to start off, etc etc. thanks :)

2. i bought the salmon oil which has omega 3/6 fatty acids, and i give him the Pet tabs ( i think thats what its called, i dont have the bottle with me atm) and it has pretty much all the vitamins/minerals. do i need anything else? is the salmon oil same as fish oil?

3. do i really need to mix the raw meat lets say beef with organs? what kinda of organs? can i just give him raw beef or chicken with veggies or do i need to add something else other then salmon oil?

4. since this is my first time making homemade raw diet, how much should i start with to completely switch over? since i cant mix raw meat with the dry dog food, do i just give a certain amount of raw meat per meal itself? and can i give him raw steak? * the meat only ofcourse not including the fats. if i want steak should i slice it intt bite size pieces or just trim the fat and toss it to him to eat it?

5. is there a time line i need to know like if i feed him a raw diet meal in the morning, do i feed him again 6hrs later? since i heard raw diet digest around 5-6 hrs and dry dog food takes about 10hrs? i dont know thats what i read, dont know if thats right.

atm, im feeding royal canin, i use to .feed him wellness, but i guess hes picky and he lost some weight until i switched to a new dry dog food and he gained weight. i have Orijen, i give him some here and there mixed in with royal canin some times, but im gonna switch him over to Orijen soon as roal canin is about to run out( i still have alot lol.) but i really really want to feed my rottweiler homemade raw diet instead tho. please help. thanks for reading and answering my questions ( hopefully)
Thanks, btw eggs, do i crack it and mix it with the meal including the yolk? or no? can i just give him only the meat itself? or do i really need to add the organs and bones? and for the bones, which kinda bones, and do i need to grind up the bones or what?
what kind of organs and is there a specific kind? like chicken heart/liver etc. etc. or just any kind?

Low Protein (kidney) diet for dogs?

My two dogs german shepherd / lab mix, are two years old and they just finished treatment for antifreeze poisoning. I have never been through something so heart breaking, they Truly are my children. I have been advised to put them on a low protein diet because of their kidneys and I’m quite picky when it comes to what they eat. They have been fed since 6 months old or so Wellness dry food and homemade meals. They can’t have corn at all, but I would still prefer an all around grain free dog food. I haven’t had any luck finding anything online and was hoping someone might have some ideas on what to look at for dry dog food. The protein needs to be at 15% or less. They also are skin sensitive. My girls say thank-you!
