I have a 4 month old min pin who has had nothing but homemade food since we first got him. This is my first time ever cooking for a pet as opposed to using commercial dog food and I have been very skeptical about recipes which include crushed eggshells. After several weeks of research and seeing the benefits of eggshells, today I finally gave in. So I boiled the shells, dried them in the oven, and crushed them to a very fine powder.
So anyways… my questions are:
1. How long do eggshells keep? I use plenty of eggs in my house so I figured it would be great to just crush them after use and keep the powder in a spice jar for convenience. I just don’t know if they will spoil/expire.
2. Do eggshells need to be refrigerated or can I just keep them in my spice rack unrefrigerated??
Thanks!!

I am sick of hearing of pet food being contaminated and never really knowing WHAT is ACTUALLY in the dog food I am feeding my pets.
So I am exploring the option of homemade dog food and I am looking for recipes that have worked for you. I have a husky if that helps, although I still would like suggestions even if you do not have a Husky.
I have done a google search; however, its hard to decide which website is reliable.
Thanks
Kate

I need help finding a homemade dry dog food recipe that I can make for my 6-7 month old pit. If any one can please give me either a link to the recipe or the recipe itself as an answer would really be helpful. I’m trying to find a recipe that contains all the vitamins etc. that my pit needs. When we first got our pit, the previous owner said he was feeding her Purina- which we didn’t believe (I think he was really giving her table scraps which that’s probably why she was sick) Anyways, I started giving her Purina Puppy chow then just recently changed to the Purina dog chow and just found out they’re bad dog foods. I have read allot on the web about the bone & meat meal thing and I just had enough of it. I decided that after this bag of Purina Dog chow finish I wanted to give her homemade healthy food. Also, I cook her own food sometimes & I give her boiled boneless chicken with plain white rice, boiled steak- which I don’t know if its any good or not, I don’t put any salts or seasoning in any of the food I cook for her. I have cooked her own p.b treats which she loves. Any tips on what I should cook for her as wet food that’s good for her and recipes for good homemade dry dog food would be appreciated. I want to make sure she is healthy and I also want to make sure whats in her food, I really want to scratch commercial foods off my list- I think that they’re just for profit. Thanks in advanced for those of you that answer.

What’s the best way to switch them from store bought dog food to a home made diet?
Does anyone have any recipes and/or websites they can share?
Also, did you notice an improvement in your dog’s health?
Also, my two Labs who love to eat. And we got our older Lab from a family who didn’t take care of him, so he weighed 120 pounds at 8 months, so he’s prone to packing on the weight now. So does anyone have any suggestions on the serving size my boys should get?
In doing my research I was told to speak to the vet about switching my dogs but when I spoke to the vet (I spoke to several vets actually) they told me not to switch them, to keep using the store bought food. However I feel the store brands are full of fillers and nothing healthy. And the brands that are decent I can’t even get where we live, and I don’t read Japanese so I don’t know what the local dog food is like.
I just would like to add that I live on one of Japan’s islands and they will not ship dog food to me.
Also, at this time feeding my dogs raw isn’t an option, we’re looking into it but until we can work something out we are not able to do raw, which is why, for now, we’re doing the homemade meals.

Hey!
I don’t know whether to buy the prescription food from the vet or just cook my dog homemade meals.. I’m worried she won’t be getting adequate vitamins or whatever. Does anyone have any recipes suitable for a dog with chronic pancreatitis?
Thanks!

HI, I have a newly acquired chi who is quite overwieght. I have had her a little over a month and I have been feeding her purina one, a 1/4 cup total each day. She has dropped wieght, that is great, but I recently had to switch to Pedigree (yuck, i know) because of the price and she has not taken well to the switch. My other dogs always do fine with a food switch, and i am always sure to make the change gradual. But since i have switch her food, her poop is extremely dry and Comes out looking just the way it went in….. I was thinking of just putting her on a homemade diet or something, since it’s just her and she eats so little it wouldn’t be too expensive. I can’t seem to find any recipes specifically for a chi, or anything that is simple and would keep in the fridge for a week or so. Any ideas? thanks alot! ohhhh she is 5 years old
any ideas of a good affordable small kibble is appreciated also!

My mother in law’s dog was just recently diagnosed as diabetic. His blood sugar was unbelievably high!
He gets insulin shots twice a day, but when I took him to the vet today they said there was no change and they upped his insulin.
The reason, I think, is because he gets WAY too many treats, but my mother in law and the other people I live with won’t listen to me when I say he doesn’t need 50 treats a day.
He gets a treat everytime he goes outside. He gets treats for looking sad. He gets treats out of pity. He gets treats after his shots….and its not my dog so no one will listen to me when I say that its ridiculous to go through 3 packs of dog treats in a week.
Is there any way I can get them to understand that they are not helping his diabetes by feeding him high-sugar treats? Or what would be an alternative way to reward him for doing such menial tasks as peeing (its to the point now where if he doesn’t get a treat everytime he goes outside, he goes nuts)
Any recipes?
Likewise, are there any vet approved homemade diets for a diabetic dog? After reading the ingredients of his canned food I’m not so sure thats the best thing to feed him afterall….the first ingredient listed is corn, followed by soybean meal, and poultry byproduct.
The dog already went blind last year…probably from too many treats.
